Downtown is small, walkable and louder than you expect. Here is how a first night usually goes, and how to make it go better.
Downtown Cabo San Lucas is a handful of blocks between the marina and the main square. You can walk the entire nightlife district in ten minutes, which is why the first night tends to sprawl: there is no travel time to slow anybody down.
The shape of the evening
Dinner happens early here by Mexican standards, because most people came off a boat and have been in the sun since nine. The rooms fill somewhere after ten and the night runs late. If you eat at eight and try to go straight out, you will be an hour early to everything.
Use the gap. The marina walk after dinner is the nicest half hour of the evening and costs nothing.
Reserving is not a formality
On a busy night the difference between a table and two hours standing is a booking made that afternoon. In the rooms that take deposits, the deposit is not a cover charge — it comes off what you spend at the table. You are paying forward.
Getting home
- Downtown to the marina hotels is a walk, and a well-lit one
- Corridor and San José del Cabo are a taxi — agree the fare before the door closes
- Save the name of your hotel in Spanish in your phone, not just the brand name
One local note
This is a working town. The people serving you are on shift, and most of them will be back at seven in the morning. Tip like you know that, and the second night in Cabo San Lucas goes very differently from the first.
