The arch at Land’s End is a twenty-minute boat ride from the marina. Here is how locals do it, and what to skip.
El Arco is the rock formation at Land’s End, the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula, and it is the one thing every visitor to Cabo San Lucas photographs. It is also the thing most people spend a whole morning on when it takes about ninety minutes.
It is a boat trip, not a hike
There is no road and no trail. The arch sits where the Pacific Ocean meets the Sea of Cortés, and the only way to stand in front of it is on the water. Boats leave from the marina in Cabo San Lucas all day, and the ride out is short — this is a bay, not an ocean crossing.
You will see three kinds of boat at the dock: glass-bottom pangas that run continuously, larger shared cruises on a schedule, and private charters. The panga is the honest choice for a first look. The charter is the right choice if the boat itself is the point of the day.
Go early, and go on a calm day
Two things decide whether this is a great morning or a mediocre one: light and swell. Early light comes over the Sea of Cortés side and lands on the rock; by mid-afternoon you are shooting into glare. And when the Pacific is running, captains will not take you through the arch itself — they will hold off it. That is not a bad trip, but it is a different one.
- Ask at the dock whether boats are passing through the arch today, before you pay
- Bring cash for the small dock fees; not everything on the marina takes cards
- Lovers Beach is on the same headland — most boats will drop you and come back
What is actually out there
Lovers Beach sits on the Sea of Cortés side of the same point, and Divorce Beach faces the Pacific on the other side of the sand. They are a few dozen metres apart and completely different bodies of water. Swim on the Lovers Beach side. The Pacific side has current, no shade, and no lifeguard.
The sea lions are real residents, not a show. They live on the rocks below the arch and they are not interested in you. Keep your distance and let the captain hold position.

The bay in the morning, lunch back on the marina, and downtown after dark is the shape of a good first day in Cabo San Lucas. Everything is walking distance from the water, which is the part visitors are always surprised by.
