Twenty miles east of the noise there is a town with galleries, historic streets and a completely different evening. Go.
Los Cabos is two towns and the corridor between them. Most visitors only meet one. San José del Cabo, at the eastern end, is the quiet half — an Art District, historic buildings, a plaza with a church on it, and a pace set by the people who live here rather than the ones visiting.
What the Art District actually is
It is a cluster of galleries in the old streets near the centre, most of them in restored houses. Painters, sculptors and jewellers, a lot of them local, some of them showing work that never travels further than this town. On the evenings when the district opens together, the streets close and it becomes the best walk in Los Cabos.
Why it is worth the drive
- It is the older of the two towns, and it looks it — in the good way
- The restaurants are quieter and the kitchens are ambitious
- You are twenty minutes from the estuary and the east-side beaches
How to do it in one evening
Leave Cabo San Lucas in the late afternoon, park once, and walk. The district is small enough that you will cover it without a plan. Eat there — do not drive back hungry — and treat the trip home along the Corridor as part of the evening.
If you only have one night and you want to understand where you are rather than what is playing, this is the night to spend it on.
